Meet one of our lesson program students!
Name: Lily Dennis
Age: 13
How did you hear about Heritage Oak Rescue? And what were you hoping to experience?
I heard about Heritage Oak Rescue after Emily moved to the property and my mom told me what she was going to do with the horses. I was hoping to get to ride the horses and connect with them.
What is your favorite thing about coming to Heritage Oak Rescue?
Getting to spend time with my favorite horse, Maz and spend time with Emily.
Who is your favorite horse? And why?
Although this is a very hard question, Maz is definitely my favorite horse. He is very good at listening; he is very sweet, and I think he likes me to. He's the best horse I've ever met.
What would you say is the most important thing you learned about horses from the basic horsemanship lessons?
Not to be mean and bossy , but to let them know you're still in charge. Also how to take care of them.
Was there ever a moment you felt a great connection with one of the horses?
I was sad when Atlas had to go, and felt very connected to him when we came to say goodbye. I got to braid his tail that day. He was a gentle giant and I miss him.
Is there anything you struggle with when working with the horses?
Them not listening to me, and also almost falling off when in a trot.
Has your experience at HOR impacted other areas of your life?
Yes, I feel confident and I feel like I could become a great barrel racer.
Do you have future plans to be a horse owner or have horses in your life in someway?
Yes, now I want horses even more than I did before.
For the past three years I've had the pleasure of introducing Lily and her siblings to my world of horses. It's been a learning process for me and them. Their success inspired the lesson program to become what it is! Lily is an artist and lover of all creatures. I'm proud to see the horsewoman she's becoming, wise, compassionate and tough! -Emily
